Surgical drawings showing the minimal shaving range

Minimal scar FUT

Six steps to avoid leaving a scar

One of the most common questions in consultation is which method will show the least once I am back at work.

Mowoolim shaves only 3mm above and 3mm below the incision. Unless you wear a crew cut, that narrow band hides the wound even the day after surgery.

Six Steps

Six steps of the Mowoolim incision

Minimal shaving

We shave 3mm above and 3mm below the incision. Unless you wear a crew cut, that band hides the wound the very next day.

A wide shave leaves the surgery visible until it grows back. A narrow one hides the site itself and gets you back to normal that much sooner.

The right incision

No two patients have the same skin. A difference of one millimetre in incision width can be enough to leave a wide, ugly scar.

Mowoolim measures the laxity of each patient’s skin individually and calculates the width that achieves both goals at once: enough hair, and the smallest possible wound.

Minimal electrocautery

Blood running from the vessels in the wall of the incision obscures the field. Cauterising heavily to stop it burns the follicles nearby, and no hair grows there once it heals.

For the best result Mowoolim does not cauterise the wall at all. We tie the deep layer with absorbable suture and let the compression stop the bleeding naturally.

Minimal skin tension

Pressure on the mid dermis, where the follicles sit, causes ischaemia, kills the follicles beside the closure and widens the scar.

We pull the deepest layer, which holds no follicles, tightly for the first closure, then add a second closure through the mid and superficial layers with just enough tension to keep the edges together.

It is more work, but this two-stage closure is what produces a donor scar so fine that hairdressers struggle to find it.

Natural hair direction

To make even the donor wound disappear, Mowoolim always closes in two layers.

Closing only the surface pulls the skin above and below the wound downward, which rotates the hair below the scar into the wrong direction. Growing your hair long may cover it, but we prefer to remove the possibility at source.

A dynamic excision line

The width of the incision matters enormously. Beyond how much hair it yields, it determines how well the donor area heals. A well-healed wound looks better immediately and matters just as much for a second operation later.

A poorly healed wound needs further surgery to hide, and it costs you hair you would have wanted for the next procedure.

Mowoolim measures scalp elasticity precisely and varies the incision thickness along its length, thicker where elasticity is good and thinner where it is not. That gives three things at once: clean healing, a preserved donor area, and a large harvest.

It is more work, but the two-stage closure is what leaves a donor scar so fine that hairdressers struggle to find it.
